Samsung & LG Refrigerator Problems

Two of the most-searched fridge issues, what happened in court, and what to do now.

Samsung: ice maker freezing up

Many Samsung French-door owners have reported in-door ice makers that freeze up, leak or stop producing ice. A proposed class action filed in 2017 was dismissed on December 28, 2023, after Samsung made individual settlement offers to certain consumers β€” there was no class-wide settlement or claim form. The dismissal was without prejudice for people who didn't get an offer.

What to do: check your model's warranty and any service bulletins with Samsung, and have a technician diagnose it. Common causes include ice buildup in the ice maker compartment, a failing ice maker fan or seal, or defrost issues.

LG: linear compressor failures

Owners of certain LG refrigerators with linear compressors sued over cooling failures. A settlement received final court approval in December 2020, including warranty extensions and cash benefits for eligible class members; the claim period has closed. LG denied the refrigerators were defective.

What to do: if your LG stops cooling, have a technician confirm whether it's the compressor or a simpler fault (fan, defrost system, sensor). Ask LG whether any extended compressor warranty applies to your model and purchase date.

Any brand: check recalls first

Search your model number on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
